Sarah Jarosz

Sarah Jarosz (pronounced juh-ROSE) shares her talent and love for music through her powerful, soulful voice and skillful mandolin picking.  She’s 14 years old and has been singing and playing mandolin since the winter of 2001.  Sarah considers mandolin and her voice to be her primary instruments, but she has recently begun exploring the fun of playing guitar, claw hammer banjo, acoustic bass, and composing music.

Sarah has performed on stage with some of the music world’s most talented musicians including:  Earl Scruggs; The David Grisman Quintet; Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder;    Tim O’Brien; Chris Thile; Darrell Scott; Phillips, Grier, & Flinner; Mike Compton & David Long; Blue Highway; Billy Bright; and The Greencards.

In the summer of 2005, Sarah was one of five teens who was invited to perform with Earl Scruggs and Ricky Skaggs for the ABC television presentation of the CMA (Country Music Association) Music Festival, hosted by Kix Brooks, in Nashville, TN.

She was recently featured on “The Biscuit Brothers” show on Austin PBS television KLRU, and on “Out on the Porch” with Jim Swift on Austin NBC television affiliate KXAN.  In February 2005, she became the youngest featured performer on the Austin radio program “Eklektikos” with John Aielli on KUT 90.5 FM.

Sarah currently performs around the Central Texas area and enjoys sitting in as a guest of other artists.  She is also a member of the Austin Mandolin Orchestra, where she had the opportunity to perform with mando greats Paul Glasse and Radim Zenkl.  In addition to performing, Sarah has been a guest instructor for mandolin workshops at several music festivals.

Sarah was awarded a scholarship for the second consecutive year to attend “a Mandolin Symposium” at the University of California at Santa Cruz in June 2005 where her teachers were David Grisman, Mike Marshall, Chris Thile, Mike Compton, Don Stiernberg, Radim Zenkl, Evan Marshall, Wayne Benson, and others.  At the 2004 symposium, she was accepted into the Master Level Class where she, and five other students with Sam Grisman on bass, composed and performed an instrumental piece with Chris Thile at the symposium’s concert finale.

Pete Wernick invited Sarah to be one of the members of a group of young musicians known as “The Young American Bluegrass Idols” who performed at the 2003 IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) Awards Ceremony and Fan Fest in Louisville, KY.  The awards ceremony, hosted by Alison Krauss and Dan Tyminski, was radio broadcast nationally and internationally.  Sarah was invited to be a special Guest of the Week in a “Children’s Mandolin Roundtable” discussion on www.mandozine.com  in December 2003.

Sarah has performed at: Old Settler’s Music Festival in Austin, TX; RockyGrass in Lyons, CO; Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Telluride, CO; CMA Music Festival in Nashville, TN; the Fredericksburg, TX Saturday Night Music Series; the Georgetown, TX Fiddlin’ Fair; the Austin Friends of Traditional Music Mid-Winter Festival; The Rice Festival, Fischer, TX (guest of Tim O’Brien); the Wimberley, TX Gospel Music Festival; Argyle Bluegrass Festival (March 2005); and numerous other Central Texas music events.   She has also performed at the Cactus Café and Threadgill’s in Austin, TX and has appeared on local radio and television programs. Sarah gets great joy from participating in a weekly jam at Charlie’s restaurant in her hometown of Wimberley, TX.

She has studied piano and has been selected for five years as a member of the OAKE (Kodaly) National Honor Choir.  She attended St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Wimberley, Texas, through the 8th grade. Sarah is currently a freshman at Wimberley High School.
