Rice Harrington passed away
unexpectedly in July 2003. Rice was a teacher of art at SMHS for
over two decades. He was loved and respected by his students and the
administration, so much so that upon his passing, the SMEF
established the Rice Harrington Art Scholarship, enabling graduating
high school artists the ability to pursue their dreams of studying
the arts at a higher level. Four close friends of Rice's formed
Cabin 10, Inc. in August of 2004 to host the Rice Festival, to "keep
a good man's vibe alive", and to provide continued funding for the
scholarship in his honor.
Thus, Cabin 10, Inc.’s mission statement is quite simple:
To embrace the spirit and legacy of Rice Harrington as a
community by gathering in support of education in the arts.
As shown in Dixie's sketch above,
Cabin 10 is a real cabin, located at YMCA Camp Flaming Arrow in
Hunt, Texas.
It is an icon for the strong friendships that were made back when
many of us first met the counselor of Cabin 10 - Rice Harrington.
Cabin 10, Inc. is a Texas 501 ( c ) ( 3 ) cultural non-profit
corporation which each year hosts the Annual Rice Festival, the
second weekend of November in celebration of Rice’s November 14th
birthday. The festival is held at Historic Fischer Hall in beautiful
Fischer Texas, rain or shine.
Festivities begin on Friday evening, with an intimate concert in the
old hall, and is followed by a day long festival on Saturday, a silent auction, a viewing
gallery of Rice’s Art, a variety of vendors, good food and drink,
and nonstop live
music featuring the very best local and national Acoustic /
Bluegrass / Americana / Folk / Roots music, from early in the
afternoon till this or the other side of midnight.
